description=Aircraft Number: 00-1 \nMaiden Flight: 31st December 1968, Zhukovsky, USSR \nFinal Flight: 27th April 1973 \nTop Speed Reached: 2,443 km/h (Mach 2.30) \nMaximum Height Reached: 16,960 m \nCurrent Usage: Scrapped \nNOTES: At the end of 1968 the prototype "044" registered as CCCP-68001 was ready for the first flight. The late day of 1968, with pilot E.V. Yelian in the cockpit and without international observers, the prototype aircraft performed the first ever flight with a duration of 37 minutes. The crew reported that the aircraft proved to be flexible and easily piloted. Half a year later, on June 5, 1969 exceeded Mach 1 and on May 26, 1970 go into history as the first civil aircraft that reached Mach 2. In 1969 was presented to the world in Moscow and in 1971 flew to Paris to take part in the XXIX Paris Air Show at Le Bourget Airport. Studies and works developed on test flights with TU-144 "044" shows different problems like enhanced vibrations level and tail fuselage heating from the engines.

Aerodynamic was improved, the wing deeply modificated and surface increased. The length of the fuselage was also increased to transport 150 passengers and new engines model NK-144A, configured in two different and separate nacelles, wich solved the vibrations and hight temperatures in the bottom part of the fuselage. A new original system of retraction of the main landing gear was developed, placed between the two engines. Two canards were added in the forward part of the fuselage to provide stability in landing and take-off. These changes increased the take-off weight until 190 tons. It was the last plane produced at “Opyt” plant and assembled at Zhukovsky and the first model TU-144S.

On August 31, 1980 during a supersonic test flight suffered the destruction of an engine. Different parts and systems of the plane were affected and the crew was forced to make a successful emergency landing at the Engels Air Force Base.

These records were including a height of flight of 18,200 m with payload from 10 to 30 tons, average speed of 2,031.55 km/h on a closed circuit of 1,000 km and 2,012.26 km/h on a closed circuit of 2,000 km. When the TU-144 program was cancelled, CCCP-77114 was used as research aircraft in experiments about the radiation in top layers of the atmosphere, ozone layer, thermal influence in different materials and studies on aerodynamics. In 1990 was placed in nonflyable storage. In 1993 08-2 was chosen to serve as testbed in a joint program between Tupolev, NASA and others US firms. The aircraft suffered an extensive modification that included the power plant, former Koliesov RD-36-51A engines were replaced by Kuznetsov NK-321 (engines of the TU-160 bomber). The new model was designated TU-144LL Flying Laboratory. The first flight of TU-144LL was on November 29, 1996 and a total of 27 flights were realized until the end of the program in 1999. Final Flight in 1999, Zhukovsky - Zhukovsky, final ever flight of a TU-144.

In the second half of 80's this aircraft was reutilised for training flights of pilots of the Soviet Space Shuttle “Buran”. CCCP-77115 was never operated by Aeroflot and remains at Zhukovsky airfield. During the MAKS Airshow can be seen parked on the ramp as symbol of the largest and the most complicated program in history of Soviet aircraft industry. Initially she was designated together with 08-2 to be converted into TU-144LL Flying Laboratory, but this conversion was never realized. This was the last completed TU-144D.
